Mentorship
A Mentorship program is an opportunity for a mentee to elevate their professional capabilities and build opportunities throughout the knowledge and experience of a mentor. This program is an effective way to help mentees achieve their goals, making a significant difference in research and career development. Pursuing these goals alone can sometimes be a waste of time and energy.
This is a fully volunteer program: mentors are not paid for this activity and mentees do not need to pay for the sessions, contacts and advice. ISHS membership is mandatory to participate.
Expectations and Goals
- Improve effective verbal communication skills
- Improve effective writing skills
- Advance training and development in the mentee’s research area
- Connection with specific researchers and laboratories that can respond to specific needs expressed in the mentee’s research area
- Develop connections and links for the mentee within the scientific, industry, and educational community

Mentors
- A mentor is a professional with large experience in a field of interest, capable of offering career guidance, advice, assistance on decision-making, help in overcoming challenges, and suggestions for future areas of study and research, all as part of a fully voluntary effort.
- While a mentor may engage in various activities to help students and early career professionals enhance their skills, it is important to clarify what a mentor is not. A mentor is not a reviewer, official academic advisor, financial supporter, or someone to be involved in personal issues like relationship or family counseling or acting as a therapist.
Mentees
- A mentee is a student or early-career professional seeking guidance, advice, and support from an experienced professional (mentor). Through this voluntary mentoring relationship, mentees have the opportunity to discuss career development, explore research interests, seek advice on professional challenges, and gain insights to help them make informed decisions and achieve their academic and career goals. ISHS membership is mandatory to participate.
- A mentee is not expected to receive formal supervision, academic evaluation, financial support, or guaranteed research or employment opportunities. The mentoring relationship is intended to provide guidance, encouragement, and the sharing of knowledge and experience. Mentees should actively participate in the process, respect the mentor’s time, and take responsibility for their own professional development.
