Horticulture for Development

Derived from an amalgamation of the Commission Economics and Management and the Commission Education, Research Training and Consultancy, the Division Horticulture for Development (DDEV) seeks to capture and report experiences from around the world in: i) facilitating the sustainable development of horticulture value chains; ii) managing diverse horticultural enterprises for more sustainable outcomes; iii) linking smallholder farmers to markets; iv) understanding the multiple factors, both internal and external, that influence the consumer’s decision to purchase fresh and processed horticultural products and to engage in leisure and wellness activities that engage with plants and landscapes; v) managing risk and uncertainty in increasingly dynamic and turbulent environments; vi) capacity building to sustain lives and livelihoods; vii) the adoption of innovation; viii) impact assessment; and ix) facilitating a conducive enabling environment for greater inclusivity. Unlike the other Divisions that are more oriented towards specific horticulture disciplines or crops, DDEV cuts across all of the other Divisions to consider some of the broader themes such as the social, economic and environmental impacts of our horticultural production systems, food security and inclusive development in both rural and urban settings.
