Young Minds

About this Division

To make the ISHS Young Minds Committee an integral part of the Society, the Young Minds Division was created. The Young Minds Division has the status enjoyed by other ISHS Divisions but is considered a “Special Division” because of the way its Chair and Vice-Chair are elected and because some of its performance expectations.

ISHS Young Minds Committee?

  • Established February 2024,
  • Composed of one ISHS Student member and one ISHS Early-Career Professional member from each of the six ISHS World Regions,
  • Members screened and selected by an ISHS Selection Committee,
  • President, Vice-President, Secretary, and general members,
  • Coordinated/supervised by ISHS Vice-President in charge of Young Minds,
  • Maximum term to serve on the committee is four years,
  • Half of committee members rotate off every 2 years to ensure continuity,
  • Call for candidates and selection process conducted every other year.

Young Minds members of the ISHS are encouraged to join this specific Young Minds Division, as well as to apply to other ISHS Divisions and Working Groups in their specific areas of expertise.

  • The Chair and Vice-Chair of the ISHS Young Minds Division are determined by the same procedure as is followed for appointing members of the ISHS Young Minds Committee and its President and Vice-President.
  • Members of the ISHS Young Minds Committee are screened and selected by an ISHS Selection Committee to maintain representation from the six ISHS World Regions.
  • After the members of the Young Minds Committee are determined, the ISHS Young Minds Committee selects its President and Vice-President from its members.
  • The selected President and Vice-President then simultaneously assume the roles of Chair and Vice-Chair of the ISHS Young Minds Division, respectively.
  • The Young Minds Division Chair attends meetings of the ISHS Executive Committee.
  • The Young Minds Division Chair has voting rights in Executive Committee meetings.
  • The Young Minds Division Chair provides an annual report of their activities to the Chair of the Executive Committee and the ISHS Secretariat prior to the annual meeting of the Executive Committee.
  • Performance expectations of the Young Minds Division do not include a requirement to maintain Working Groups as expected for other Divisions, however, they are not precluded from doing so.
  • In such case Working Groups could also operate as Special Working Groups.
  • The primary function of the Young Minds Division Chair and Vice-Chair is to pay attention to the Working Group activities in other Divisions and interact with symposium and congress conveners to encourage participation of Young Minds members and pay attention to programming details of potential interest to Young Minds members.
  • It is also expected that Young Minds Division Chair or Vice Chair (or their designee) work with Congress organizers to create a Workshop or social opportunities for ISHS Young Minds participants to connect with Young Minds members from around the world at Congress events, including regional congresses when possible.
  • Fulfilling the role of Division Chair for the Young Minds Division does not preclude future service as Division Chair in another Division after they are no longer chair of the Young Minds Division.
