Orchids

The main scope of the Working Group Orchids is to bring together researchers, scientists, students, orchid growers and orchid enthusiasts who study and conduct scientific research on orchids for identification, production, conservation, sustainable use, and marketing. Orchids are international plants and are grown for aesthetics, hobbies and business in every part of the world. Many countries emphasize their beauty, medicinal use, and value for cosmetic ingredients, and use orchids as the symbols of their countries. Recently, interests on orchids focus on: in situ conservation, reintroduction of specific genotypes, ex situ conservation and seed storage, propagation and tissue culture, breeding for new cultivars suitable as potted plants, cut-flowers and displays having cultural significance. This Working Group has focused on topics related to propagation by seeds and tissue culture, reproductive biology, physiology, pest and disease control, postharvest technology, and marketing. The Working Group provides members the opportunity to update their orchid specific knowledge, network and form collaborations with other orchid horticulturists and enthusiasts from around the world.
