ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF SOME VARIETIES OF THAI MANGO SEED KERNEL EXTRACTS

Abstract
Mango (Mangifera indica) is one of economic fruits of Thailand with more than 5 cultivars that are popular in the world market.
Mango seed kernel is the most enriched part of mango fruit with nutritional values and potential compounds for various uses such as antiseptic, antiviral, and antifungal activity.
In Thailand, most of mango seed kernels are treated as waste from their production process.
It is therefore, a waste from mango seed kernel that is potentially an antimicrobial agent.
Antimicrobial activity of some varieties of Thai mango seed kernels has been proposed.
Five cultivars of Thai mango seed kernel including ‘Nam Dok Mai’, ‘Fa Lan’, ‘Raet’, ‘Kaeo’ and ‘Kaeo Sawoei’ were selected for screening of antimicrobial activities.
All seed samples were crushed, dried and followed by 95% ethanol extraction at 50°C for 24 hours.
The extracts of all mango seed kernels in this study, were tested against Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus by Agar Diffusion Method.
The results showed all mango seed kernel extracts gave high antimicrobial activities against E. coli, B. cereus, S. typhi and S. aureus. The results also showed no significant difference on antimicrobial activity between five varieties of the Thai mango seed kernel extracts.
There is a high possibility to use mango seed kernel extract as antimicrobial agent against E. coli, B. cereus, S. typhi and S. aureus. It has been concluded and suggested for further product development.
