Abstract
Iris dichotoma and I. domestica are Chinese native ornamental plants, belonging to the Iridaceae family.
Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers showed that Iris dichotoma and I. domestica were closely related, indicating the possibility of interspecific hybridization between the two species.
Interspecific hybrids with I. domestica as male parent and Iris dichotoma as mother were obtained.
The offspring was identified as true hybrids by morphological identification and AFLP analysis.
Afterwards also the second filial generation (F2) and the first backcross generation (BC1) were obtained successively.
F1 hybrids mainly resemble their parents and most of them look phenotypically as the female parent.
However, the F2 offspring, unlike parents, had a greater variation, especially in the flower colours and flowering time.
In addition, all generations we obtained were fertile, showing that there are no reproductive barriers in parents and hybrids.
This is consistent with our AFLP results that Iris dichotoma and I. domestica were closely related and they can breed with each other.
