Sugar beet lime sludge composts as organic fertilizers

Two composts were studied in our research: C1 was prepared with sugar beet lime sludge plus household waste and green waste, while C2 was prepared with the same composition plus olive mill wastewater.
Monitoring of physicochemical parameters during the composting process showed that the composts produced are stable and mature.
Furthermore, determination of the agronomic value of compost C1 was performed in two field trials on a sugar beet crop using 6 t compost ha^-1. The results obtained showed increases in plant biomass and root development without any phytotoxicity detected, which reflects the quality of the compost tested.
The beets produced showed a good yield, despite a 30% reduction in chemical fertilizer (NPK), and the same technological quality as the control.
The agronomic test was also conducted on radish for compost C2, and showed promising results.
Both composts, produced from lime sludge, could constitute a sustainable solution in order to reduce the harmful effects of chemical fertilizers.
