Rhizogenesis and contents of polyphenolic acids in cuttings of old rose cultivars treated with rooting stimulants

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of rooting stimulators on the rhizogenesis in cuttings of old shrub and rambler roses and the changes in the content of polyphenolic acids.
The following once-blooming cultivars were chosen: Hurdals, Maidens Blush, Mousseuse Rouge, Polstjårnan, and Semiplena. The single-node stem cuttings were harvested from shoots and treated with either (a) the standard rooting preparations containing 0.4% IBA (Ukorzeniacz Aaqua), 0.2% NAA (Ukorzeniacz Baqua); or (b) the biostimulants/plant origin preparations: Bio Rhizotonic, Root JuiceTM, Bio Roots.
The percentage and degree of rooting as well as the contents of polyphenolic acids in the plant material and their correlations were evaluated.
The use of plant-origin preparations resulted in increased or the same levels of polyphenolic acids as compared to the untreated control cuttings.
The increase in the content of polyphenolic acids correlated with the increase in the rooting percentage in Semiplena as well as in the rooting degree in Hurdals, Mousseuse Rouge, and Polstjårnan. In general, the plant-origin preparations positively affected the percentage of rooted cuttings and rooting degree; however, their effect depended on the cultivar and the natural rooting ability.
