Abstract
A virus transmitted mechanically from symptomless youngberry (Rubus loganobaccus x R. flagellaris)plants to Chenopodium quinoa was shown by immune electron microscopy (IEM) to be serologically related to raspberry bushy dwarf virus (RBDV). Two out of 37 youngberry sources collected from the main production areas yielded virus.
The isolates resembled the type isolate from red raspberry (R. ideaus) in symptomatology and particle morphology but differed in properties in vitro, to suggest a closer serological relationship with isolates from black raspberry (R. occidentalis). This is a first report on the occurrence of RBDV in Southern Africa.
