Effects of postharvest LED-UVC treatment on the quality of grapevine fruits during cold storage

Abstract
Clusters of grapevine fruits (Vitis vinifera L. ‘Campbell’) harvested at the last ripening periods were treated by 280 nm UVC light-emitting diode (LED-UVC) for 6 min.
After being packed with HDPE film, the clusters were sticks, or at 4±1°C with 90±5% RH for 28 days.
The LED-UVC treatment enhanced the firmness and reduced the percentage of weight loss and decay of the grapefruits during the storage period.
Three hours after the treatment, total phenolics content, total anthocyanin, and antioxidant activity (DPPH) were higher than in control (untreated) fruit samples.
In addition, LED-UVC slightly upregulates the transcript level of the chalcone synthase gene (VvCHS) and anthocyanidin synthase gene (VvANS). These results indicate that LED-UVC radiation induces gene expression, synthesizing various bioactive compounds and improving the postharvest quality of grapevine fruits.
