Abstract
In 1979 mutant comparisons within the cultivars ‘Golden Delicious’ and ‘Cox’s Orange’ were started on different ecological sites, at Bavendorf and Weinsberg, using mostly virusfree and otherwise genetically identical material.
Many common naturally occurring mutants were gathered from many parts of Europe.

After a test period of 6 years it became evident, that the mutants of both cultivars have distinct differences in crop yield, russetting, fruit size and red colour.
For each cultivar the main characteristics were evaluated to find out which mutants had the best performances for fruit-growing.
