Abstract
As people become increasingly aware of the accelerating environmental damage to rural landscapes, they will begin to demand a more conscientious use of land in towns.
Sterile official open spaces, and blighted industrial wasteland are "luxuries" which will not be tolerated for much longer.
Sterile official open spaces, and blighted industrial wasteland are "luxuries" which will not be tolerated for much longer.
The kinds of vegetation establishment and management techniques discussed elsewhere will all play a part in satisfying the new, sophisticated demands placed upon urban green-space.
Landscape will increasingly be expected to "pay its way" and if we are to achieve anything more than a utilitarian "productive landscape" then we must begin to quantify all those other benefits of urban vegetation such as climatic improvement, pollution control, physical and mental well-being, property enhancement and nature conservation.
