Abstract
A revision of literature on papaya breeding is presented with pertinent comments on present situation.

Sex expression problem influenced by environmental conditions, fruit yield and quality can be improved considerably through breeding.
Special attention is called for the potential of Carica species on breeding programmes aiming to obtain resistance to virus and fungi diseases.
The production of commercial hybrid seeds is considered a promising approach for increasing papaya yield and improve fruit quality.
