Abstract
Orchard weather drives not only crop development but a host of other less desirable biological processes.
Electronic data-loggers have been used widely in horticultural research to monitor orchard environment but are not widely used in commercial orchards.
It is proposed to use loggers sited in individual growers orchards as a key component of an integrated orchard decision environment.
The high spatial and temporal accuracy of locally recorded data will reduce the variability that arises when regional daily measurements are translated into hourly temperatures at a particular site.
The decision environment will incorporate a suite of decision support models and an underlying orchard database.
The models allow growers to examine the likely consequences of various decision options and are each backed by a number of years of field research.
Ease of use and graphic presentation of results combine to make the underlying technology an ally rather than a foe.
