DIF AND TEMPERATURE DROP FOR SHORT-DAY POT PLANTS

Abstract
Two experiments were carried out in order to investigate the growth regulating potential of reversed day/night temperature regimes (Dif) and temperature drop as alternatives to chemical growth control for flowering short-day potplants.
In the first experiment, which was carried out in glasshouse compartments, the Dif -6°C treatment reduced plant height in both chrysanthemum and Begonia.
However growth regulators were still needed to obtain an acceptable plant height.
Kalanchoe reacted in the opposite manner to the Dif -6°C treatment, and showed a strong elongation of the flower stems.
In the second experiment, which was carried out in climatized daylight chambers, the Dif treatment was compared with a short temperature drop at the end of the night.
For chrysanthemum, Dif was more effective than temperature drop in reducing plant height, whereas in poinsettia, Dif and temperature drop reduced plant height to the same extent.
