Abstract
Groundnuts may be considered as a horticultural crop, under the general definition of a high investment crop with a high value product which can be used directly for human consumption without prior conversion to another product.
In this paper the term "confectionary" is used to describe all forms of kernel which are consumed by man, with the exception of those which are crushed in order to extract the oil.
By size-grading and rejection of discoloured nuts, consignments of kernels acceptable to the edible nut trade can be produced, thus enabling a proportion of the crop to be sold as ‘Hand picked and selected’ (HPS) at a considerable premium over ordinary ‘Fair average quality’ (FAQ).
