Abstract
The region of Ghent is one of the most important horticultural centres in the world.
The most important plants cultivated in the different nurseries are azalea, begonia, green plants, cutflowers and nursery stock.
Also the vegetables and especially the vegetables cultivated in greenhouses are very important.
All the nurseries need great quantities of substrates with optimal properties.
Approximately 800.000 m3 (De Boodt and Verdonck, 1970) of substrates are used (table 1). Three products can be used as substrates :
- pine and leaf moulds,
- peat products,
- inert materials as perlite, vermiculite, polyurethanes, polystyreen …
