Abstract
In order to overcome alternate bearing problems with cv.
Elstar apple trees in the Rhine region, a two-year (1995–1996) field trial was conducted at Ahrweiler experimental station.
Cv.
Elstar apple trees were thinned either by hand, amid-thin or ethephon.
The recommendations derived from the results are a) one application of [amid-thin (0.08%) + Ethrel (0.025%) at petal fall] and b) two applications of Ethrel (0.025%), on ca.5 June and 12 June and hand-thinning at the end of June.
