Abstract
In Mexico, cherimoya is found semi-cultivated in backyard gardens.
The area of cherimoya cultivation is estimated at 500 hectares, dispersed in the subtropical regions between 1,400 and 2,000 metres above sea level.
An exploration indicated that cherimoya has a high genetic variability in the region and that there exist genotypes with some good agronomic characteristics, and that follow-up studies are needed to collect, characterise, select, and conserve the outstanding genetic material in regional germplasm banks.
This research could serve as a basis to support commercial plantations of cherimoya and other native fruit trees in Michoacán and in other regions of the country where there exists a high potential of natural resources and the potential to develop the cultivation of both native and introduced fruits.
