Abstract
We tested the use of respiration rates of narcissus (Narcissus tazetta L. cv.
Paper white) and (Narcissus pseudonarcissus L. cv.
Geranium) cut flowers at different temperatures as a tool for predicting vase life after, respectively, five or six days of storage at those temperatures.
Over the 0 to 12.5 C temperature range, the flower respiration of both types increased exponentially with increasing temperatures, and had an average Q10 of 3.5 and 3.7 respectively.
For both types, also, vase life after cold storage at different temperatures was highly correlated with respiration rate at the storage temperatures.
The value of respiration measurements as a tool for predicting the effects of different storage temperatures on vase life is discussed.
