Abstract
The study investigates the spread of soilless cultivation systems in the stretch of coast of Ragusa (Sicily, Italy), where four thousand hectares of plastic greenhouses are exploited but, until now, the system has only been used on a very small surface area.
The first attempts to adopt soilless cultivation systems in the Ragusa area took place in 1989. In the paper the results of a survey conducted in 1995 are shown and some hypotheses on the causes of the evolution during the first seven years are put forward.
