Abstract
Plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key pest of apples in eastern North America for which no reliable monitoring tool is available.
Systematic treatments need to be applied to protect the fruit, thus preventing the implementation of sound integrated pest management (IPM) programs in apple orchards.
Stepwise regressions performed on data collected from two apple orchards between 1984 and 1988 were used to create a model relating hourly activity, between 18:00 and 08:00, to hourly temperature (R2=0.75). Validation of the model in 2000 during the 4-week period following bloom showed that hourly activity predicted by the model was highly related to observed activity (r2=0.57) during that period.
