THE EFFECTS OF INTERNAL ETHYLENE PRODUCTION ON COLORATION AND ON-TREE FRUIT SOFTENING OF JAPANESE PERSIMMON

As yet there is no information on the presence and role of internal ethylene in the fruit of the Japanese persimmon.
The object of this study is to clarify this role.
It was found that spraying ethrel on the bearing shoots of ‘Hiratanenashi’ Japanese persimmon, which was done at various stages from July 20 to September 19, after August 29 promoted coloration whereas treatment before August 15 did not.
From these results it is thought that the response system for the coloration of persimmons is active from the beginning of stage n of development, which occurs in late August.
One month after this system becomes sensitive, ethylene is generated in fruit on the tree, which may playa role in triggering coloration. ‘Saijo’ persimmons tend to soften on the tree before ripening.
The internal ethylene generated in the fruit on the tree in early to mid October may be a trigger for this softening.
