ESTIMATION OF EVAPOTRANSPIRATION OVER A GREENHOUSE TOMATO CROP USING THE PENMAN-MONTEITH EQUATION

A study was conducted in an unheated greenhouse to evaluate the Penman-Monteith equation (PM) for directly computing evapotranspiration over a tomato crop (ETc). This experiment was carried out at the Panguilemo experimental station, which is located in Talca, Maule Region of Chile (latitude: 35°23′ S, longitude: 71°40′ W, altitude; 110 m above sea level). From August 2000 to January 2001, an eddy correlation system (EC) and an automatic meteorological station were installed, in order to measure evapotranspiration and climatic variables (solar radiation, air temperature, air humidity and wind speed) on an hourly basis, respectively.
Additionally, the volumetric soil moisture content (θ) was measured twice per week during the experiment using time domain reflectometry (TDR) in order to check soil moisture content.
Results indicated that there was a good correlation between ETc values measured by EC and estimated by PM equation with a root means square error, an absolute relative error and coefficient of determination of 0.58 mm d^-1, 13 % and 0.85, respectively.
