CHARACTERISTICS OF JAPANESE GARDEN: COMPARISONS IN KOREA, CHINA, AND THE WEST

The characteristics of Japanese gardens discussed by many scholars include love of nature (Tamura, 1935), spiritually natural landscapes (Mori, 1973), and a vision of ideal nature (Bring and Wayembergh, 1981). However, there are few studies which compare Japanese gardens with those in other Asian countries especially China and Korea (Fujii, 1995, 2003; Park et al., 2006). Here we will discuss the characteristics of Japanese gardens and compare them with gardens of Korea, China, and Western countries from a design viewpoint stressing the relationships between humans and nature.
Subjects considered include the overall composition of gardens, the relations between indoor and outdoor spaces, ground and pavement, ponds and streams, and tree forms.
