EMERGING SOILBORNE DISEASES OF HORTICULTURAL CROPS AND NEW TRENDS IN THEIR MANAGEMENT

Horticultural crops are economically important worldwide and share some common features, such as their high value, continuous intensification and innovation in their production systems, presence of a high number of crops and varieties, severe limitations in the use of chemicals.
During the past few years many new diseases caused by soilborne pathogens (such as different formae speciales of Fusarium oxysporum, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora spp.) have been detected, also as a consequence of the profound changes undergone in soil disinfestation.
The phytopathological situations of vegetables as well as of ornamental crops will be presented, with special reference to Italy, and the evolution of some soilborne diseases as a possible consequence of the current limitations in the use of chemicals, of the globalization of the markets and/or of climate change will be critically discussed.
The most recent trends in disease management (use of host resistance, soilless systems, soil amendments, biological control) are critically discussed.
