European and Asian Pears

The Working Group European and Asian Pears brings together researchers, breeders, extension specialists, and industry stakeholders to advance knowledge and innovation in pear cultivation, breeding, physiology, orchard management, and pest control. Its activities focus on fostering international collaboration and information exchange on all aspects of pear research, including the preservation of germplasm and the development of improved cultivars with enhanced fruit quality, storability, and resistance to pests and diseases; the optimization of orchard systems, canopy management, pruning, training, and adaptation to changing climatic conditions; the study of fruit development, ripening behavior, storage protocols, and postharvest technologies to maintain quality and reduce losses; the design of integrated and sustainable strategies to address key biotic challenges in pear production; and the alignment of research and production with evolving consumer preferences, sustainability goals, and global trade. The Working Group organizes international symposia every four years and is one of the oldest ISHS Working Groups, with fourteen successful editions held under the aegis of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). These activities promote the dissemination of cutting-edge research, strengthen international partnerships, and support the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the global pear industry, with a strong emphasis on mentoring and engaging young scientists who represent the future of the research field.
