Plum

About this Working Group

Plum trees, with their impressive diversity and global relevance, hold a unique place among temperate fruit crops. As members of the genus Prunus, plums serve both as an important source of nutrition and as a powerful model for research in genetics, genomics, and breeding of drupe species. Their rich genetic variability, adaptability to diverse climates, and broad range of fruit qualities – flavor, texture, color, nutritional value – make them a fascinating focus of scientific exploration and technological innovation.

The Working Group Plum brings together researchers, breeders, students, and professionals from across the globe to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange on all aspects of plum cultivation, from germplasm conservation to modern breeding strategies and postharvest technologies. Our group encourages interdisciplinary approaches that integrate genetics, physiology, pathology, bioinformatics, and crop management. Particular attention is given to the contribution of plums to human health, thanks to their dietary fiber and high levels of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and antioxidants.

The group also values and supports links between academia and industry, encouraging members to develop or strengthen collaborative projects with public or private stakeholders. By fostering such partnerships, we aim to promote innovation and impact at both scientific and commercial levels.

We are committed to maintaining a vibrant and inclusive community. In 2024, we celebrated the first joint International Symposium on Apricot and Plum. This milestone event brought together leading researchers and professionals to share advances across key topics such as climate resilience, pest and disease management, genetic resources, postharvest quality, and breeding for consumer preferences.

Looking forward, the Working Group Plum seeks to strengthen its global network by identifying active members, mapping ongoing research lines, and encouraging new collaborations. We invite all those working with plums – whether in basic research, applied breeding, extension, or production – to join us in this effort. Together, we can unlock the full potential of this remarkable fruit for the benefit of growers, consumers, and ecosystems worldwide.

Let’s keep the plum community growing!
