Organic Greenhouse Horticulture

Organic greenhouse horticulture represents a specialized subset of horticultural production, defined as the cultivation of organic horticultural crops (including vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals) in climate-controlled environments, such as greenhouses and tunnels. Organic greenhouse production is characterized by high yields of highly nutrient demanding crops. While the intensive nature of greenhouse horticulture offers numerous advantages, including year-round production and protection from adverse weather conditions, it also presents distinct challenges; the higher energy demands, substantial investments in infrastructure, and limited options for crop rotation can complicate a sustainable management. It is therefore essential to develop integrated knowledge frameworks that address these challenges, ensuring environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

The mission of Working Group Organic Greenhouse Horticulture is to foster knowledge development and dissemination within this evolving field. We aim to share existing insights, stimulate the creation of a comprehensive long-term vision, and outline a research agenda that addresses critical information gaps. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of international collaboration to enhance the research and development landscape for organic greenhouse practices.

Our sphere of work encompasses various facets essential to successful organic greenhouse horticulture including, but not limited to: breeding and cultivar testing, plantlet production, soil and water management, fertilization, plant health, weed control, crop management, product quality, food safety issues, and sustainability of organic greenhouse horticulture.

By addressing these areas, the Working Group seeks to support the development of organic greenhouse horticulture as a viable, sustainable approach to modern food production. We welcome participation from farmers, researchers, educators, and stakeholders in the horticultural value chain to collaboratively build a knowledge-rich community dedicated to advancing sustainability in organic greenhouse systems.
