Abstract
Spices are valuable crops on the international market and attract substantial foreign exchange into countries that possess and trade with them.
Spices also have potential value in the pharmaceutical, food and medicine industries.
Despite the potential value to the horticultural industry of Nigeria, little or no information exists on the human gender aspects involved in their production.
This study was therefore carried out to determine gender involvement in spice production.
Multi-stage sampling techniques were used to select respondents for the study.
Ninety six respondents, both male and female spice producers, were randomly selected from important spice producing areas of Benue and Niger States in the Northern Central zone of Nigeria.
A structured interview schedule was used to elicit information from respondents.
Data obtained was analyzed with frequencies, percentages, Chi-square and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) methods. 80% of producers were male, 83% married and 78% in their active years. 40% of producers had farm sizes of up to one hectare.
Positive and significant relationships (r=0.64, p=0.00) existed between farming experience and age.
The study therefore recommends that gender specific technologies should be made available to ensure sustainable spice production for local and export markets.
