Abstract
Influence of foliar infection by the greenhouse whitefly (GHWF) on resistance to Meloidogyne javanica on highly nematode-resistant wild watermelon (Cucumis africanus) was investigated to establish if it was necessary to manage GHWF population densities in Cucumis species.
A 2×2 factorial experiment was laid out in a randomised complete block design, with 12 replications.
The greenhouse was partitioned into 24 compartments of 2.5 m2 each using a mosquito-proof net.
Approximately 2,200 second-stage nematode juveniles and 1000 adult greenhouse whitefly from tomato plants were introduced into selected treatments a day after transplanting.
Fifty-six days after initiating the treatments, significant interactions on variables were observed, with GHWF eliminated resistance to M. javanica in C. africanus seedlings as shown by the reproductive factor values that were greater than unity, and reduced plant yield.
Consequently, there is need to manage GHWF population densities when C. africanus seedlings are used as nematode-resistant rootstocks for managing M. javanica population densities.
