Abstract
Poppy can be grown in nearly every areas of Slovakia.
Large-scale production technologies are used for cultivation.
All agro-technical operations from sowing to harvest are fully mechanized.
Crop stand is established by sowing 1-2 kg of treatment seeds per hectare.
In order to obtain 1.2 t.ha-1 yield, fertilization with basic nutrients is needed in following quantities: 50 kg N, 21.7 kg P2O5, 61.7 kg K2O a 66.7 kg CaO. B and Zn are important micronutrients.
Growing of Slovakian poppy cultivars makes it possible to use herbicides against weeds.
These cultivars are very tolerant.
The herbicides do not have any phytotoxicity to poppy seedlings as compared with foreign cultivars.
Pesticides against diseases and pests are also used.
The harvest is realized using ordinary reaper-threshers.
There are two ways of harvesting – the seed is either collected without the straw, which is immediately crushed and ploughed under, or with straw.
This mixture can be stored for a short period and dried, if needed.
Consequently, the mass is separated.
To assure high quality of poppy straw for morphine extraction, an adapter is available which cuts the capsules with 100-150 mm long stem.
