Abstract
One of the most common diseases of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is soil-borne Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici), which causes serious economic and yield losses.
Major strategies for controlling this disease are soil fumigation with methyl bromide, using resistant cultivars, grafting on to resistant rootstocks, and biological control methods.
In the present study, the role of mycorrhizal fungi and Fusarium-resistant rootstock in the control of Fusarium wilt in tomato plants was evaluated based on a factorial experiment in a randomised complete block design.
The tomato cultivar ‘Milas’ was grafted on to a commercial Fusarium wilt-resistant rootstock (‘Efialto’). Seeds were sown in a sterile sandy soil medium.
For mycorrhizal seedling production, fungal inoculum (Glomus intraradices) was added to the sterile medium before sowing.
Seedling roots were immersed for 10 min in a Fusarium spore suspension at transplanting time.
At the end of the experiment, shoot and root dry weight, plant height and phosphorus concentration were measured.
The results showed that inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi and grafting onto the resistant root stock significantly reduced the incidence of Fusarium wilt disease, thus grafting or mycorrhizal inoculation was recommended for Fusarium wilt control in tomato plants.
