Abstract
In field production, crop rotation is important to prevent infestation of diseases and pests.
However, crop rotation is rarely practiced in greenhouse production, which allows soil borne pathogens and pests to accumulate, progressively reducing crop yields.
In vegetable crops this is one of the most serious factors affecting the farmer’s income, requiring adoption of soil disinfestation.
Methyl bromide was the most effective fumigant for controlling nematodes, weeds, pathogens, insects and rodents.
However, adoption of the Montreal Protocol ended the use of methyl bromide in Romania in 2005. Research which began in 2002 has identified non-chemical alternatives that are suitable for conditions in Romania.
For example, the use of grafted plants is very beneficial in vegetable production.
The practice of grafting productive high quality cultivars onto rootstocks that are resistant to soil-borne diseases has been done for many years and recent improvements in the methodologies have spread quickly.
The objective of this research project was to evaluate the performance of grafted eggplants grown in greenhouse conditions.
The incidence and severity of soil-borne disease were evaluated.
Grafting was found to significantly reduce the incidence of Verticillium dahlia and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melongenae.
