ANALYSIS OF THE LISTS OF RECOMMENDED VARIETIES FOR THE ITALIAN PEACH INDUSTRY FROM 1995 THROUGH 2012

Abstract
In 1994, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Regional Governments, has funded a national project to test the varieties commercialized in Italy of the main fruit crops and, on the basis of the agronomical and pomological behaviour, for publishing an annual List of recommended varieties.
The working group peach and nectarine is made of 14 Research Units located from North through South.
A common experimental protocol was adopted and a minimum of 2 positive fruiting seasons are necessary before to include a new cultivar in the List and a minimum of 5 fruiting seasons for a final evaluation.
The 22 Lists published yearly since 1995 through 2012, include 160 peaches (84 melting yellow flesh, 50 melting white flesh, 26 non-melting-clingstone) and 99 nectarines (80 yellow flesh, 19 white flesh). In Italy the non-melting-clingstone peaches are grown not only for processing but also for fresh market.
The cultivars grown in Italy are not only the recommended ones, but the Lists can give reliable information about the tendency, as far as concern varieties, of the Italian peach industry.
All the cultivars of the 22 Lists have been released in 3 countries: USA (114), Italy (111), France (28), USA-Italy (3), USA-France (1).
The recommended varieties were more numerous in 1995 than in 2012 (130 vs. 99). Within the 5 commercial categories, in the same period, only the white nectarines have increased (6 vs. 11), all the other decreased.
Reflecting the importance of the industry, the yellow flesh cultivars have been, in all years, more numerous compared to the white ones (in 2012, 29 vs. 19 for peaches, 27 vs. 11 for nectarines).
Comparing the varieties of the 1995 List to the varieties of the 2012 one, the highest renewal rate has been observed for yellow peaches (62%), the lowest for non-melting-clingstone (23%), being the other, 52% for yellow nectarines, 53% for white peaches, 55% for white nectarines.
