Abstract
The application of citric acid (CA) to cabbage seedlings can alleviate drought stress imposed at transplanting.
To understand the mechanisms of drought stress alleviation, soil water depletion, growth, nutrient uptake, and hydrogen peroxide concentration of seedlings were evaluated with and without the application of CA. When applied as a pre-transplanting treatment with withholding of irrigation afterwards, the application of CA did not reduce soil water depletion after.
As a pre-transplanting treatment but without subsequent drought stress, CA had no effect on seedling growth but increased phosphorus uptake.
However, hydrogen peroxide accumulation showed a slight decline when CA was applied.
The application of exogenous CA may reduce drought stress via oxidative stress alleviation.
