Abstract
Flowering and bulbing are the most important phenomena in the life cycle of onion and both are driven by the same gene family, the FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT). FT induces bulbing or flowering in response to day length and temperature in onions.
Identification and characterization of flowering related genes involved in bulbing was carried out in a short day onion cultivar (‘JISL-5’) in this study.
There are at least 11 FT, one CO and one TFL1 like gene in this short day onion cultivar.
The expression patterns of AcFT1, AcFT2, AcFT3, AcFT4, AcFT5, AcFT6 and AcTFL1 during bulbing indicated that AcFT6 might be involved in initiation of bulbing with others like AcFT1, AcFT2 and AcFT3 participating in later stages of bulb enlargement.
