Flower biology and fruit set in cherry

A renewed interest in cherry growing is often accompanied by erratic cropping.
While environmental factors are usually searched to explain failures in fruit set, the main causes of a good or a bad crop appear to lie inside the flower.
In this work the reproductive process in cherry is first examined in a positive way, following the steps that go from pollination to fertilization.
Then, these steps are re-examined from a negative perspective looking at what are the alterations along this process that result in failures in fruit set.
The fact that the pollen tubes remain in the flower once the sperm cells have passed, leaving written where the reproductive failures lie, converts the flower in a black box, helping to clarify where the problem lies, and thus providing the clues to solve them.
