Abstract
The ventilation frequency in aerobic composting processes directly influences the composting course.
This study monitored the effects of different ventilation frequencies and the use of urea to regulate the material C/N value on composting.
Besides the study clarifies the appropriate ventilation frequency in the vegetable waste aerobic composting process.
The following conclusions were drawn: the average temperature was 47.29°C when the ventilation frequency was 15 min 8 h-1, which was significantly higher than that of other treatments (P<0.01). At the end of composting, the lowest germination index (GI) value was 80.48% when the ventilation frequency was 15 min 2 h-1, which was significantly lower than that at 15 min 8 h-1 (P<0.01). The nitrogen loss rate increased significantly by 17.67% when urea was added to the vegetable waste compost (P=0.02). Therefore, urea was unsuitable for regulating the material C/N value in vegetable waste aerobic composting.
The nitrogen loss rate was 34.01% when the ventilation frequency was 15 min 8 h-1, which significantly decreased by 23.26% compared with that at 15 min 2 h-1 (P=0.03). The ventilation frequency of 15 min 8 h-1 was the suitable frequency under the experimental conditions.
