Abstract
Leave Protein concentrates (LPC) were extracted from Solanum aethiopicum L. (Sa) and Solanum macrocarpon (Sm). The overall yield per hectare of LPC from Sa (149.9 kg/ha) was higher than that from Sm (130 kg/ha). The protein and soluble oxalate contents of Sa (39.09% and 2.70% respectively) were significantly higher than those of Sm (36.43% and 2.47% respectively). The amino acid (a.a) profile of the LPC showed close resemblance to a. a pattern of whole leaf protein and provided all the nutritionally important a.a in adequate quantities, with methionine and cystine limiting only in Sm.
The nutritional responses in albino rats on diets containing these LPC as sources of 10% protein were negative showing different degrees of weight loss relative to lower levels of feed and protein intakes and the palatability of the LPC. The apparent and true digestibility of the protein for Sa were higher (76.6% and 85.2%) than for Sm (71.1% and 74.1% respectively). Supplementation of the LPC diets with different levels of methionine improved responses in Sm.
