Abstract
One of the major problems of the banana industry is an effective sucker management to sustain high banana production in 4-6 years life span of the plantation.
One, two, three and four suckers respectively were maintained per mat spaced 3 m apart at planting.
One, two, three and four suckers respectively were maintained per mat spaced 3 m apart at planting.
Maintaining two suckers per mat gave significantly superior yield of the plant crop.
Increasing the number of sucker resulted in a corresponding reduction in the yield of the plant crop.
The yield per banana plant of the first ratoon crop decreased with increase in the number of suckers maintained.
Although the total yield per hectare increased significantly when four suckers were maintained, the bunch weight was unacceptable to the consumers.
