Abstract
Weeds are main competitors with vegetable crops, including onions, for nutrients, water, space, light, etc.
Therefore, a field experiment with the onion cultivar ‘Lyaskovski 90’ in two consecutive vegetation seasons (2020 and 2021) was carried out.
The research was performed in the base for training and implementation at the Agricultural University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The trial included the following treatments: 1. Untreated weedy control, 2. Straw mulch (winter wheat straw) – 2.00 t ha‑1 dry matter (applied after planting before germination of the crop – BBCH 00); 3. Green mulch (ryegrass) – 30.00 t ha‑1 fresh weight (BBCH 00); 4. Smerch 24 EC (240 g L‑1 oxyfluorfen) – 1.00 L ha‑1 (BBCH 00); 5. Stomp Aqua (455 g L‑1 pendimethalin) – 3.50 L ha‑1 (BBCH 00); 6. Butisan 400 SC (400 g L‑1 metazachlor) – 2.50 L ha‑1 (applied in crop growth stage 2nd-3rd leaf visible BBCH 12-13); 7. Basagran 480 SL (480 g L‑1 bentazon) – 3.50 L ha‑1 (BBCH 12-13); 8. Onyx (600 g L‑1 pyridate) – 1.50 L ha‑1 (BBCH 12-13). The efficacy of the mulches and the applied herbicidal products against the weeds Amaranthus retroflexus L., Solanum nigrum L., Abutilon theophrasti Medik., Portulaca oleracea L. and Setaria virirdis L. was reported.
The total chlorophyll content, fresh weight, plant height at harvest, leaf number, and total soluble solids of the onion were assessed.
The straw and green mulches (treatments 2 and 3) controlled the weeds to a lower extent, while the efficacy of the straw and green mulches against the weed A. theophrasti was 28.50 and 2.95% average for the period respectively.
The herbicidal applications showed varying efficacy between the weed species.
All evaluated growth parameters were negatively influenced by the weed infestation and the lowest results for the untreated control were recorded.
The highest total chlorophyll content was measured in treatments 2 and 5, while the highest total soluble solids content was in the mulched variants.
Plant fresh weight, height, and leaf number also differed between treatments.
