Abstract
Field trials were carried out for two seasons using the cultivar California Wonder and 70 cm spacing between ridges to study the effects of 4 in-row spacings (30, 45, 60 or 70 cm) and 4 levels of nitrogen (0, 40, 80 or 120 kg N/ha) on plant growth, yield and fruit quality.
Results indicated that both closer spacing and nitrogen application increased marketable yield and number of fruits per hectare.
The highest yield was obtained with 2N (1981–82) season but it dropped with more application of nitrogen.
Neither inrow spacing nor nitrogen had an effect on average fruit weight.
The increase in yield was mainly due to the increase in number of fruits per plant and not to fruit size.
Plant height, number of branches per plant and number of leaves per plant were not significantly affected by closer spacing or nitrogen application.
