Abstract
Breeding for resistance to tomato leaf curl virus (TLCV), a natural epidemic on tomatoes in the Sudan, started with screening of different tomato species in search of a source of resistance.
Some lines belonging to the species Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium, L. peruvianum and L. hirsutum proved to be resistant under field and glasshouse conditions.
A resistant line, LA 1478 of L. pimpinellifolium was used as a donor parent of restistance in crosses with susceptible cultivars of L. esculentum including Strain B, Money Maker and Early Pack # 7, and the backcross method of breeding was adopted.
Evaluation of backcross progenies took place in the field under natural presence of the vector, the cotton white fly (Bemisia tabaci). A situation of natural epidemic of the disease in the field made artificial innoculation unnecessary.
The inheritance patterns of resistance shown by the F1, F2 and backcross generations pointed to a nonogenic control of this character, with complete dominance of resistance over susceptibility.
Selection in the backcross progenies was directed towards resistant plants with desirable horticultural characteristics.
Additional susceptible cultivars were entered in crosses with resistant backcross progenies to transfer resistance.
