Abstract
The apple production in Finland is restricted by the hard climate.
The severe winters often cause losses by injuring and killing the trees and creating fluctuations in the annual yields.
The use of hardy plant material varieties, rootstocks and hardy stembuilders is a first premise for controlling the injuries.
In addition the choice of orchard location and the growing technique used have a great influence on the winterig of the trees.
