Abstract
In June 1984, plum pox (sharka) virus (PPV) was detected for the first time in Spain.
Initially the virus was detected by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in Japanese plum trees, cv.
Red Beaut, showing typical symptoms of the disease.
The detection was later confirmed by graft-transmission on GF-305 peach seedlings and also by immunoelectron microscopy.
At present our work aims at establishing the most suitable conditions for detecting PPV by ELISA, obtaining monoclonal antibodies from semi-purified solutions of PPV and determining the real incidence of the virus in Spain.
The state of our work is discussed in the present communication.
