Abstract
Chrysanthemum is an ancient and important flower crop in the Netherlands.
With respect to auction turnover it is the second crop in Holland, after the rose.
On a worldwide scale Holland is after Japan the greatest chrysanthemum producer.
About 50% of the supply is being exported.
Especially the year round crop has undergone a rapid development.
Breeding, research and new cultivation methods have contributed considerably to this development.
Thanks to a strong productivity increase per area unit, improved energy utilization, labour saving measures, etc., the cost price per unit product has not risen strongly.
Although the year-round chrysanthemum crop has been improved in many respects there are still many problems waiting for a solution and many situations which can be improved.
Research can contribute greatly to these solutions and improvements.
