Abstract
Four factors control the contribution which fruit research and development can make to production by the year 2000. These are:-

  • Consumer demands: the market for produce

  • Production opportunities: the technical opportunities to meet the demands

  • Producer constraints: the economic and social framework

  • Timescale

These provide the framework within which we can look at the targets for research and development on fruit.
Scientific advances are made, as a rule, within the context of a scientific discipline.
Effective applied research depends on consideration of the scientific opportunities in relation to economic and social perspectives.
