Abstract
The countries in the sub-tropics are characterised by low potato yields inspite of enough sun shine hours during the short cropping season in winter.
Based on the available agro-meteorological data, the constraints imposed by temperature and photoperiod are outlined.
Breeding strategies have been postulated which would lead to the selection of varieties with inbuilt characteristics to circumvent these constraints.
Such varieties when grown under improved cultural practices should go a long way in increasing the area and yields of the potato crop in the sub-tropics.
