Abstract
Potato nodal cultures subcultured for a number of cycles were found to contain a variety of bacterial contaminants.
Of these contaminants two, tentatively identified as a fluorescent Pseudomonad and a Coryneform bacterium, were present in a large proportion of the population.

Disease indexed cultures of Solanum tuberosum cvs.
British Queen and Golden Wonder were artificially inoculated with the two major contaminants, both separately and together and the effect on subsequent growth was investigated.
The contaminants caused changes in the in vitro performance of the material that were dependent on the bacterial strain, potato cultivar and the period of time between subcultures of the in vitro cultures.
